The collapsing world economy in 2009 impacted the Trade Show and Convention Industry in the Greater Toronto area resulting in 12% shrinkage of work.  The massive slow down in the United States economy had an immediate and lingering effect on Trade and Tourism in Canada.
 
On a positive note, the "Honda Indy" returned to Exhibition Place last July and racing will continue next year and beyond.  The "ALL STREAM" convention facility opened in October in the former Automotive Building Exhibition Place and is now the premier "Meeting and Banquet Centre" in Toronto.
 
Construction of a 26 floor hotel with 300 rooms could start as early as next year.  This is a long awaited, much needed addition to Exhibition Place.
 
The Toronto and Region successful bid for the 2015 PanAm Games will generate work for Local 506 members in Construction and our Trade Show Convention Sectors.
 
The Ambercroft Training centre continues with programs for Exhibit and Display and related work places that give newcomers and existing members the skills and certification required to service this industry.
 
Labour and cleaning department members ratified a three year agreement at Exhibition Place that provided wage increases and improved language.  Negotiations have begun with "Centre Plate" and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre negotiations will begin shortly.  Notices to bargain have been sent to all the Exhibit and Display Employers. Their contract will expire December 31st, 2010 and it will be a challenging year for members employed in the Trade Show and Convention Industry.
