In 2005 we held a Tribute for our Leader, Carmen Principato.  This tribute raised over Fifty Thousand Dollars, in which Carmen graciously donated the entire amount to our Scholarship Fund.  Because of Carmen’s constant belief in the education of our children and his commitment displayed by this donation, the Executive Board and Members of Local 506 unanimously moved to rename this Fund under his name.

For the first time this year, Local 506 created a second program for the purpose of awarding Bursaries to children entering or enrolling in either University or College.  The following top 10 recipients were awarded with $500.00 Bursaries in recognition of their exceptional efforts and commitment to education.  These students are also optimistic to try again next year.

The judges of the awards were chosen from a variety of backgrounds based on their experiences, knowledge and community involvement.  Applicants were solely accepted from members in good standing and children of our Staff were excluded.  To determine the selection of the recipients, the judges received each submission and awarded points in the following categories:

-    Transcripts based on academic performance;
-    Resume based on involvement in community services, involvement in extracurricular activities;
-    Essays’ as submitted.

Although our judges have busy schedules between their daily work and community services, they had a difficult task in scoring each application, spending considerable time to evaluate and we take this opportunity to recognize them:

-    Mr. Vince Knap, Mediator Specialist, Field Manager, Dispute Resolution Services.  Vince has worked with Local 506 over the years in assisting us in labor relations, his commitment has helped us to avert many strike situations.

-    Mr. Toni Varone, President of The Varone Group.  Tony is not only a friend of Local 506 but our neighbor.  He has stood by Local 506 in many initiatives over the years.

-    Mr. Michael Thompson, Councillor Ward 37, Scarborough Centre, Michael’s accomplishments are endless and his work on behalf of our communities led to his re-election with the highest number of votes and margin of victory of any Councillor in the 2006 City of Toronto Municipal Elections.

-    Mr. Manuel Bastos, Business Manager of our sister Local in Hamilton, Local 837.  He continues to lead with us in several areas and is an inspiration.

-    Ms. Joanne McMahon, Legal Counsel, Fyshe, McMahon LLP.  Joanne is a partner with Fyshe, McMahon out of Hamilton.  She practices exclusively in the union-side of labour and employment laws.  In fact on numerous occasions has represented LIUNA Local 506 and our members.

On behalf of the Executive Board, Staff, Members and the Children of our Members we thanked the Selection Committee and gave each of them a plaque as a token for their contributions to this great event.

Local 506 awards 3 University Students and 1 College Student with a Scholarship.  This was not only a testament to the children but an equal testament to the parents of these young adults.

Our history shows that most of our members are immigrants and joined Local 506 to provide a foundation and a good life for their families; so we celebrate their accomplishments as well.  The achievements of these students reflect well on the support their families have given them.
