SHOP STEWARD/ FOREMAN SEMINAR

Stewards and Foreman are the foundation of the Union. It is through them that Union are able to exercise social equality and worker’s control. Shop Stewards are elected representatives of Union members in the workplace. Stewards must make sure that management sticks to agreements, which have been negotiated with workers. They must also make sure that management carries out decisions reached in negotiations. It is important to be vigilant. Steward/ Foreman keeps in touch with the members and educates them. The Steward/ Foreman makes sure everyone he or she represents has a union membership card. A well-informed Local is a strong Local!

You empower us to hold an Annual Steward/ Foreman Seminar. This year it took place on Saturday, March 4th, 2017. Amongst our 500 Shop Stewards and Foreman in attendance, we were joined by distinguished guests from Union Leaders, Government Officials and Labour Relations Professionals, sharing their knowledge and strengths in assisting us in our goals.

Our panel of speakers who shared their information and knowledge included our LiUNA International Vice President and Regional Manager of Central and Eastern Canada Joseph S. Mancinelli as our motivational speaker; Jack Oliveira, Business Manager of the Ontario Provincial District Council and LiUNA Local 183; From the United State Of America, Samuel Staten Jr., Vice President at Large and Daniel Woodall Jr., President of the African American Caucus respectively; Hassan Yussuff, President of the Canadian Labour Congress; Premier Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario; Mayor of Toronto, John Tory and Mayor of Brampton, Linda Jeffrey who have enlightened our members and guests.

These awards are in recognition of outstanding service and dedication towards improving the work environment and wellbeing of our members.

STEWARD OF THE YEAR: CONNOR MACDONALD

Connor joined Local 506 in 2012 and has strived to portray the qualities a member of the Union should have. He has been a stable worker with a great sense of responsibility while employed with Catholic Cemeteries for the past 5 years. Connor attended and successfully completed the 10-Week Shop Steward Training while still working and he played an integral role to set up the training program when the company wouldn’t do so. He put in a lot of his time in his role as Shop Steward and is involved and sat as a committee member in numerous negotiations. He is definitely the eye and ear of the Union to ensure equality and fairness on the job for his fellow comrades.
